A Miracle Mixture: Sagar Island Women’s Collective

While many community members of Sagar Island are leaving to find work elsewhere because their crops have been destroyed by rising sea levels, the Sagar Island Women’s Collective is determined to find an alternative. They are developing “a miracle mixture,” a liquid varmi compost that reduces the salinity of the soil and protects the crops during the monsoon season when the salt water floods the fields.

Dreaming of Trees in the Sundarbans

Sefali, at 14 has made it her life goal to plant 35,000 mangroves around her island of Maipith in the Sundarbans, an area that is particularly vulnerable to storms and rising sea levels. During Cyclone Aila in 2009, Sefali witnessed first hand how important mangroves are to survival in the region.
